Temporary Marine Fisheries Technician II

Description of Work:
The Marine Fisheries Technician II will serve as the technician to the principle biologist on a long line survey for adult red drum in Pamlico Sound. This study will be used to develop a fisheries independent index of abundance for adult red drum in North Carolina. Duties include the construction, deployment and retrieval of long line gear from which captured red drum will be tagged and released. Additional duties are trailering, maintaining and operating outboard boats up to 25 feet in length. The technician is responsible for summarizing, coding, and verifying biological data for computer entry. The employee will also assist with other Division projects as needed. This is a temporary position and some overnight travel will be required with per diem provided for meals and lodging. (This is a re-post. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of marine species identification and processing for biological programs; thorough knowledge of recreational and commercial fisheries; ability to trailer and operate outboard boats up to 25 feet in length; ability to maintain and operate fisheries sampling equipment; ability to swim. Must have a valid driver’s license.

Training and Experience:
Graduation from a community college or technical school with an associate degree in fisheries management or a related field and one year of experience in the fisheries industry including experience with vessel operation; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Must possess a driver’s license.
